Tim, I agree with you that it would be little improvement if Menno leadership were to give in to the financial pressure from the queer community instead of the homophobic commununity. It would be a shift in power that would really change nothing other than the direction of power and not actually question the function of financial power in the church.

On the topic of polygamy: In that weird way that when you learn a new word or idea you suddenly hear it the very next day (does anyone know the word for that?) here are two articles I just came across. One relating to polygamy in modern society and the other polygamous Anabaptists.

Polygamy in Two Restoration Movements (I am actually too lazy to read the whole thing now but strange huh?)

Polygamists Fight to be Seen as Part of Mainstream Society - from the Washington Post, today

Katie, I love the image of the clever little Mennonite lesbian sitting on your right shoulder, tapping on your ear and the little cynical Mennonite lesbian sitting on top of your head, fuming away. My only question is, who or what is on your left shoulder?

Your proposal is an attractive and intriguing one. It's nice to fantasize about showing the Mennonite Weekly Review article to Mennonite leaders and seeing a little Mennonite light bulb pop on above their heads: "Wow, we could treat LGBTQ people with respect and still maintain our teaching position"

One striking parallel is the wealth aspect. Sometimes I wonder if the tipping point for acceptance of LGBTQ folks as normal in mainstream US culture (at least some segments) was the discovery of the pink dollar. It would be sad and ironic if the Mennonite church waited to become accepting until the giving potential of LGBTQ Mennonites outweighed that of conservative anti-LGBTQ donors. The church would not be better for it.
