Resurrection Day

[Resurrection Icon]

O Death, where is thy sting? O Hell, where is thy victory?

Christ is risen, and thou art overthrown! Christ is risen, and the demons are fallen! Christ is risen, and the angels rejoice! Christ is risen, and life reigns! Christ is risen, and not one dead remains in the grave. For Christ, being risen from the dead, is become the first-fruits of those who have fallen asleep.

To Him be glory and dominion unto ages of ages.

Amen.

    Brian,

Thanks for this meditation. Praise God that the risen Christ calls us to rise with him!

You’re quite welcome, Forrest, and praise God indeed. But the meditation is not mine: it’s the tail end of St John Chrysostom’s Paschal homily, preached every year on Easter in many Orthodox churches. ‘Chrysostom’ means golden-mouth–for the saint’s incredible rhetorical skill.

I came across this post, searching for the icon. It is reassuring that the Young Anabaptists can look past the clouds of division and darkness in the West, to see the truth of the Risen Lord radiating from the Christian East – as your quotation from St. John so aptly recounts. There is no reason to fear the holy icons, as they are reveletory, not the Revealer.

    in Christ
