I’m afraid this didn’t come as a huge surprise to me but I definitely have a sick feeling in my stomach right now. This is a clip from 1994 of Dick Cheney. He even uses the term quagmire. It’s like he was looking into a crystal ball at the future…and then they did it anyway.

good find katie! gee thanks, cheney.
Actually, Jon Stewart on the Daily Show, aired this clip, and said that Cheney gave nearly identical speeches in 1992 and 1996. So over a four year period Cheney was saying that taking down the Saddam government was a big mistake. Some have tried to make the case that 9/11 changed that. Why? Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11, and 9/11 did not change the fact that once Saddam was deposed, we would find outselves in a “quagmire.” It was a neo-con ideology that was so focused on what they wanted to do, that they decided to completely ignore the well known consequences. Over 3500 US soldiers have given their lives for that ill-thought out decision, and nearly 20,000 have suffered severe, often permanent, and life changing injuries. And how many tens of thousands of Iraqis have lost their lives? Interestingly, Cheney was interviewed just about three weeks ago, and the question was asked, “If you knew then, what you know now, would you still have invaded IRAQ?” His answer was “Yes, absolutely.” That is obviously the reply of a man that just finds it too painful to admit he was totally wrong.
